The ACME Studio Hatch Etched Roller Ball Pen by Karl Zahn uses brass as both its material and its central design idea. The body is acid etched rather than covered in ACME's usual multiple lacquer layers, allowing the brass surface to become increasingly exposed through use while preserving the graphic Hatch pattern.

Designed Around Brass
Karl Zahn created Hatch to take advantage of the inherent antimicrobial properties of brass. ACME applies a thin clear lacquer to the new pen for a polished initial finish, but that coating gradually wears away with use and exposes the raw brass underneath.
The etched construction also changes the pen physically. ACME removes material from the surface to create the design, and notes that the resulting cap is not intended to post on the back of the pen.

Brass construction: The design centers on the natural properties of brass rather than treating the metal as a purely decorative surface.
Acid-etched pattern: Material is removed from the brass to create the Hatch design directly in the pen body.
Clear lacquer finish: A thin protective coating gives the pen a polished appearance when new and gradually wears away to expose the brass.
Non-posting cap: Because of the etched construction and resulting dimensions, ACME specifies that the cap does not post on the back of the pen.
