HORL at Design & Grace
German-made bread knife with Triple Pro Cut serrations, a resharpenable 12C27 steel blade, and solid oak handle
The HORL Brotmesser Bread Knife with Oak Handle is a German-made serrated knife designed around a problem most bread knives ignore: keeping the edge sharp over years of use. HORL's Triple Pro Cut combines ridges, serrations, and smooth plateaus to move through crust, crumb, and the base of a loaf, while the double-beveled Swedish 12C27 knife steel blade can be maintained with a HORL sharpener at the 15° setting. The solid oak handle is glued, sanded, and oiled by hand and matches HORL's oak sharpeners.
Why buy here
Design & Grace is an authorized HORL retailer, so your Brotmesser is genuine HORL and backed by the manufacturer's warranty.
Your HORL Brotmesser is carefully packed and shipped from our Texas facility.
Our team can help with HORL sharpeners, angle supports, honing discs, and long-term knife care.
What stands out
Ridges, serrations, and smooth plateaus work across the different textures of crust, crumb, and the bottom of the loaf.
The cutting edge can be maintained with a compatible HORL sharpener using the 15° angle support and honing disc.
HORL uses a hard Swedish knife steel with a substantial spine for a stable, controlled cut.
The blade is ground on both sides for straight slicing whether you are right- or left-handed.
HORL glues, sands, and oils the wood by hand, giving the handle its clean shape and natural grain.
The blade extends into the handle without external rivets, preserving the Brotmesser's clean design.
HORL manufactures the Brotmesser in Germany with its specialized serrated geometry and hand-finished solid wood handle.
Best for
Triple Pro Cut opens a firm crust before moving cleanly through the softer crumb.
The blade is ground on both sides, so it gives a straight cut through pastries as well as bread.

From Our Founder
"Most serrated bread knives are difficult to maintain once the edge starts to fade. HORL has solved that in a very practical way. The Brotmesser cuts cleanly through a crusty loaf, but you can also refresh the edge with the same 15° HORL system you already use for your kitchen knives. The solid oak handle gives it the same considered feel as the matching sharpener."

Questions answered
The HORL Brotmesser is a German-made bread knife with HORL's Triple Pro Cut serrated edge, Swedish 12C27 knife steel, and a solid wood handle in Oak or Walnut.
Triple Pro Cut combines three parts of the cutting edge for the different textures in a loaf. Ridges tackle the crust, serrations slice through the softer interior, and smooth plateaus finish through the base.
Yes. Unlike many conventional serrated knives, the Brotmesser is designed for regular edge maintenance with a compatible HORL sharpener. Set the blade at 15° and use the honing disc along both sides of the cutting edge.
Yes. The blade is ground on both sides, giving right- and left-handed cooks the same straight, controlled cutting action.
It is designed for bread and baked goods including crusty sourdough, baguettes, soft loaves, and pastries.
The cutting design and performance are the same. Oak has a lighter, warmer appearance, while Walnut has a deeper brown tone. Both are solid wood, finished by hand, and designed to coordinate with HORL sharpeners in the corresponding wood.
